The plant body of Bryophytes is more differentiated than algae. It is thallus like, prostrate or erect and attached to the substratum by unicellular or multicellular rhizoids. They lack true root, stem or leaves since vascular bundles are absent. The main plant body is haploid gametophyte and produces gametes. Sex organs are multicellular and surrounded by sterile jacket layer. The male sex organ is antheridium and female sex organ is archegonium. Antherozoids released into water comes in contact with archegonium and forms zygote through internal fertilization. Zygote develops into a multicellular body called sporophyte. Sporophyte consists of foot, seta and capsule. The sporophyte is dependent on gametophyte for its nutrition. Capsule contains spore mother cells and undergo meiosis to form spores which later develops into a new plant body. Their life cycle is haplo-diplontic.
