Consider a positively charged electroscope. Hence, leaves of the electroscope have already diverged. Two natures of charge can be identified by considering two cases. They are:
Case 1: Since the electroscope is positively charged, when a positively charged rod is brought in contact with the brass cap, the positive charge on the leaves increases further, thus divergence of the leaves increases showing that the rod is positively charged.

Case 2: When a negatively charged rod is brought in contact with the brass cap of the electroscope, the free electrons from the rod move towards the leaves, thus divergence of the leaves decreases indicating that the rod is negatively charged.
