When the source is a point source of light and the object is bigger than the source.
We can obtain a point source of light by placing a cardboard piece with a pinhole in front of a bulb or any other source of light. In the above figure, when the source is lighted, the pinhole will act as a point source of light. Now, place a ball between the point source of light and a white screen.

The region PP' obtained on the screen is completely dark with sharp edges as it does not receive light from the source. This region is referred to as the umbra region or the region of complete darkness. If the screen is moved closer to the object, the size of the shadow decreases and vice versa.
