Coalition within a party denotes the diverse nature of the party. It means different people belonging to different social groups and ideology are existing in the party without giving up their individuality. The presence of different opinions within a party is a healthy condition in politics. The Indian National Congress emerged as a party where different social groups and ideologies like moderates, extremists, conservatives, right-wing, and left-wing were welcomed. Their opinions were welcomed within Congress.

Coalition of parties means when two or three parties come together and form an alliance over any common issue. Often it has been witnessed that this type of coalition is short-lived. A coalition government is formed when any political party fails to get an absolute majority in Lok Sabha or state legislative assembly. In such cases, two or more parties come together to form an alliance. As their alliance becomes the majority seat holder in the legislature, they form the government.

Since $1952$ Congress alone enjoyed the majority seats in Lok Sabha and in many state legislatures. It is only in the year $1977$ that an alternative government was formed under the leadership of Moraji Desai, a coalition government, for the first time in India. So it is not justified to determine that we had a coalition government since $1952$ .
