Saponification refers to the process of formation of soap by reaction between fat, oil or lipid and an alkali. The chemical equation is shown below: The limitations of soap are: 1. Do not form lather (or foam) in hard water, instead forms scum. This makes washing of clothes difficult and also affects colour of the fabric. 2. Soaps are unsuitable for certain fabrics such as silk, wool as the base spoils these fabrics.

Explain the structure of cationic detergents with an example and write any one use of it.

Cationic detergents are quarternary ammonium salts of amines with acetates, chlorides or bromides as anions. Cationic part possess a long hydrocarbon chain and a positive charge on nitrogen atom. Hence, these are called cationic detergents. These are used as wetting agents, fabric softeners, bacteriostats and emulsifiers. Example: Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.
