The Temple Movement was started by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar as he struggled due to the oppressive nature of the caste system and the practice of untouchability within it.

This type of oppression was not new to Indian society. It was a century-old tradition. Initially, Indian society used, the caste system just as a means to decide on the specialisation of labour. Later with the increase in population and corruption in the society, this system has taken an oppressive turn.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, the caste system and the practice of untouchability was given new definition that affected the life of common people badly.

The affected people began to resist against it and the upper-class caste people were outraged when Dalits entered the temples and used water from the temple tanks.
