Rich peasant communities from the countryside, such as the Patidars of Gujarat and the Jats of Uttar Pradesh, actively participated in the movement. They were unable to satisfy the government's demand for revenue as their cash income started to fall.

And a great deal of resentment was generated as a result of the government's failure to lower the revenue demand. These wealthy peasants enthusiastically joined the Civil Disobedience Movement.

They organised their villages and occasionally coerced reluctant members to take part in boycott campaigns. But when the initiative was abandoned in $1931$ without the revenue rates being altered, they were extremely upset.

The participation of poor peasants in the Civil Disobedience Movement:

The poorer peasants were concerned with reducing the revenue demanded by landowners. Many of them were modest tenants who grew crops on property rented from landowners. As the Great Depression hit, the small tenants found it difficult to pay the rent.

They joined various radical movements, particularly those run by Socialists and Communists. The Congress was unwilling to support campaigns with 'no rent' in most regions as they felt it would infuriate the wealthy peasants.
