Indian Defence Minister, V.K Krishna Menon decided to use military force on Dec $11, 1961$ to liberate Goa and termed it Operation Vijay.

Subsequently Indian troops were dispatched and attacked Goa, Daman and Diu.

After sealing the two routes that connected Goa to India, the army entered and arrived at Panjim on Dec $19, 1961$ .

Not facing much resistance from the Portuguese soldiers, Major General K.P. Candeth hoisted the Indian flag as the army captured Mormugoa, Canacona, and Margao.

On the same day, Portuguese Governor Vassaloe Silva handed the political control to Indian government and signed the instrument of succession.
