Explain Mendel's law of segregation with the experiment.

According to Mendel’s law of segregation, every individual possesses a pair of alleles for any particular trait and each parent passes a randomly selected copy (allele) of one of these to its offspring due to segregation of genes during gamete formation.

Experiment: Mendel first selected a pure tall and pure dwarf pea plant. Pure breeds of plants were identified as these produce the same phenotype generation after generation on self-fertilization.

Mendel made a cross-pollination between pure tall and pure dwarf pea plant and after fertilization, the seeds formed were germinated to produce tall plants only. This generation is known as the first filial generation or F1 generation.

Mendel was wonder about the existence of dwarf trait in the F1 generation. Mendel performed self-pollination of the F1 tall plants. From this cross, Mendel obtained 787 tall and 277 dwarf pea plants. The ratio obtained is of 3 tall: 1 dwarf approximately among F2 progenies.
