Life cycle of a Butterfly: The life cycle of a butterfly has four stages. The life cycle of the butterfly is shown below:

(i) Egg: Butterflies do not take care of their young ones, but they make sure that food is available close by. They stick their eggs under the leaves of plants. The egg has a hard shell and lined with wax.
(ii) Larva: A larva or caterpillar soon comes out of the egg. It breathes through its skin and uses its antenna to move around. After some time, it shed its skin and develop a new one. This goes on till it enters the pupa stage after two weeks.

(iii) Pupa: The pupa wraps a fine fibre around itself that forms a cocoon. At this time, the animal inside the cocoon is like tomato soup. Every part of it gets re-arranged.
(iv) Adult: When the adult is ready to come out, the cocoon breaks open. A pretty butterfly comes out of the cocoon. It has colourful wings to fly.
