The causes of poverty are as follows:

The bulk of poor people in rural areas and landless labours with no resources. Unfavourable climate like no rains, floods, or any other natural calamity. Lack of resources enough to set up an establishment, cover insurance. A low resource base is the most important cause for poverty both among the rural and the urban poor.

The cost of education in the case of the poor section is out of their reach. The cost of stationary, burden of opportunity cost adds to lack of education among poor people. Poverty gets perpetuated due to inequality of opportunities to upgrade money-earning skills.

Lack of opportunities for full-time employment is also one of the causes of poverty. The high share of unemployment to total population is of one whose household income is very less. In rural areas the farmworkers get employment only for some month in a year, hence contributing to seasonal unemployment.

Large-scale industries are capital intensive that is the use of machines for production. The production from the factories reduce the jobs available for artisans, who were producing the same goods but a little more expensive. The new factories set up do not create enough jobs to absorb the displaced people from their land.
