A force is a push or pull on an object, measured in newton(N). If the forces are balanced, it means that in every direction a force is balanced by another force in its opposite direction.

Example:

This box has balanced forces because it has two newtons pushing up balanced by two newtons pushing down, and five newtons left balanced by five newtons right. The forces in the x-direction and y-direction are balanced.

An Example of Balanced Forces

Let's take a look at one more example: an aeroplane. An aeroplane has several forces acting on it: the force of gravity (weight) acting down, the lift created by the wings acting up, the air resistance (drag) trying to slow it down, and the forward thrust force created by the engine.

According to Newton's Laws of Motion, an unbalanced force is one that causes a change in the motion of the object to which the force is applied.

Examples of Unbalanced Forces

If you and your friend push the door with the same force in opposite directions, the door does not move. Because you both exert same force in opposite direction of the door, the two forces cancel each other but if you apply slightly less force than your friend the door moves towards your side as more force is applied by your friend. This is unbalanced force.
