Explain biogas formation in a biogas plant.

The raw material for biogas production is the cattle dung called Gobar, which is rich in methanogenic bacteria. The biogas plant has a concrete tank (10-15 feet deep) in which bio-wastes and slurry of dung are collected. The tank has a floating cover that rises on the production of gas in the tank.

The production of biogas is a three step process:

Anaerobic digestion or hydrolysis- In this process, anaerobic digestion of complex insoluble polymers to simple soluble monomers occurs with the help of hydrolytic enzymes secreted from anaerobic bacteria like species of Clostridium, Pseudomonas, etc.

Acetogenesis or Acidogenesis- The monomers obtained from hydrolysis then converted to organic acids chiefly acetic acid by the action of enzymes from acidogenic bacteria.

Methanogenesis- The organic acids are then converted to biogas with the help of the enzymes of methanogenic bacterial species, which include Methanococcus and Methanobacillus.
