Microorganisms are microscopic organisms. A number of microorganisms can cause diseases in living organisms. These are as follows-

Bacteria-These are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms that exhibits different shapes such as coccus-round-shape, bacillus-rod-shaped, spirullum-sprial-shaped, vibrio-comma-shaped. Cholera, typhoid are bacterial diseases respectively caused by bacterium Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi. Citrus canker is a bacterial disease in plants.

Viruses-Viruses are the intracellular obligate parasites and can undergo reproduction in the presence of the host body. They are smaller than bacteria and are only visible through an electron microscope. Viruses can multiply inside the body of host and can be stored in the bottles as crystal, therefore considered as connecting link between living and non-living organism. AIDS is a viral disease caused by HIV. Yellow vein mosaic of okra is an example of viral disease in plants.

Protozoa-These are unicellular, microscopic eukaryotic organisms. Protozoans are heterotrophic organisms. Protozoans usually lack the capacity for photosynthesis as they lack chlorophyll, and they move independently by one of the three types of locomotory organelles-flagella, cilia and pseudopodia. Malaria and dysentery are protozoan diseases respectively caused by Plasmodium and Entamoeba.

Fungi-Fungi are microscopic organisms, containing a cell body without chlorophyll and therefore, they do not undergo photosynthesis. These are saprophytes. Fungi are unicellular such as yeast or multicellular such as mould. Ringworm is an example of fungal disease in humans. Apple scab is an example of fungal disease in plants.
