Common emitter configuration using $n - p - n$ transistor:

The transistor is most widely used in this configuration. When a transistor is used in CE configuration, the input is between the base and emitter and the output is between the collector and the emitter. This configuration has the highest power and current gain. The output is the inverse of the input in this configuration.

Common collector configuration using $n - p - n$ configuration:

This is also called an emitter follower circuit. Here the input is between collector and base and output is between collector and emitter. Output and input signal are in phase in this configuration.
