The human circulatory system is a type of double circulatory system. It is known as the double circulatory system because blood passes through the heart two times to supply once to the entire body through the veins and arteries. Separation of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood is necessary because this makes the circulatory system more efficient. It also helps in maintaining constant body temperature.

Types of double circulation
The double circulation of blood includes:
(i) Systematic Circulation
(ii) Pulmonary Circulation
Pulmonary Circulation

The pulmonary circulation is the circulatory system between the heart and the lungs. The vena cava supply the deoxygenated blood to the right atrium of the heart. The right atrium contracts and passes the deoxygenated blood to the right ventricle, through the tricuspid valve. The right ventricle contracts and transfers the deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries transport it to the lungs where the blood gets oxygenated. The pulmonary veins transport the oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart from the lungs.

Systematic Circulation
The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from pulmonary veins. It contracts and, through the bicuspid valve, the oxygenated blood enters the left ventricle. The oxygen-rich blood passes to aorta from the contraction of the left ventricle. The aorta branches off to many arteries that distribute the oxygenated blood to all the regions of the body.
