A lubricant reduces friction by helping the surfaces slide over each other smoothly. A lubricant forms a thin layer between two surfaces in contact, and it decreases the irregularities between the surfaces. A well-lubricated machine runs more smoothly, lasts longer and generates less heat.

Ball bearings are used to reduce friction because rolling friction is less than sliding friction.
This principle is used in ball bearings which contain steel balls or rollers. Ball bearings used between the wheel and axle of a car reduce friction considerably.
