Blood is a red-coloured fluid connective tissue which flows in blood vessels to each part of the body and transports respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, etc., to different parts of the body. The presence of haemoglobin, a red pigment protein in the red blood cells (RBCs) makes blood appear red in colour.

The blood consists of two components:

1. Fluid component - Blood plasma

Plasma is the straw-coloured liquid portion of blood which lacks blood cells and contains water and other essential elements needed by the body.

2. Cellular component - Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets

Red blood cells are the most abundant cells in the blood. These cells contain a red pigment called haemoglobin which carries oxygen and transports it to all parts of the body.

The white blood cells can change their shape and helps the body in fighting against diseases. Thus, they constitute the immune system of the body.

The platelets are tiny blood cells which help in blood clotting during the damage to blood vessels and thus prevent the excessive bleeding from wounds.
