Enzymes are proteinaceous in nature. It lowers the activation energy of the biochemical reaction in the body of a living organism. All the enzymes possess some characteristic properties. Many factors affects the mode of action of enzymes. Sometimes the enzyme binds with the allosteric site and exhibits allosterism.

Allosterism is a property of enzymes in which an effector molecule binds with an enzyme to change the conformation of the active site of the enzyme making it either favourable or unfavourable for the binding of the substrate with the enzyme. The binding of the effector molecule may either cause an active enzyme to get inactivated or an inactive enzyme to get activated. According to this property, allosterism is mainly classified into two types, positive allosterism and negative allosterism.

Positive Allosterism- When an effector molecule binds with an enzyme, it changes the conformation of the active site of that enzyme in such a manner that it facilitates the binding of the substrate with the enzyme. Such effector molecules are known as inducers. This kind of phenomenon is known as positive allosterism and is exhibited by allosteric enzymes.
