Explain the Haversian system of bone tissue.

Tissue is a group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit. Bone is made up of compact tissue (the hard, outer layer) and cancellous tissue (the spongy, inner layer that contains red marrow).

The structural and functional unit of bone tissue is called the Haversian system. The Haversian system is composed of a dense matrix called ossein which is rich in calcium and phosphate the system consists of concentric circles called lamellae. These lamellae have small openings in them called as Lacunae. The Lamellae is connected to the adjacent lamellae by the thread-like structure. The Haversian canals surround blood vessels and nerve fibers throughout the bone and communicate with osteocytes.
