Construction of compound microscope:

Two convex lenses comprise a compound microscope. The lens is mounted near the object with the shorter focal length, is called objective lens or objective piece. The longer focal length and larger aperture lens mounted near the eye of the observer is called the eye lens or eyepiece. Both of the lenses are fixed with adjustable provision in a narrow tube.

Working of compound microscope:

At a distance slightly greater than the focal length of the objective lens, the object $AB$ is kept. The other side of the objective lens is formed by a real, inverted and magnified image $A' B'$ . This image serves as an object for the lens of the eye. The position of the eye lens is adjusted such that the image $A' B'$ falls within the eyepiece's principal focus. On the same side of the object, this eyepiece forms a virtual, enlarged, erect image $A'' B''$ . A compound microscope has $50$ to $200$ times more magnification power than a simple microscope.
