Explain the construction and working of a pinhole camera. Support your answer with a well labelled diagram.

The pinhole camera is a device used to form a real and inverted image of any object on a screen. The labelled diagram is given below.

Construction: Take a shoebox. Remove the lids on opposite sides. Cover one end of the box with a translucent sheet of paper which acts as a screen and the other end with a black chart paper. Make a small hole with the help of a pin on the black chart paper near the center of the face of the box. The pinhole camera is ready.

Working: When we look at any object like a tree through this camera we can see a small image of the object on the translucent sheet of the paper. This image is real and inverted because the light rays from the top of the object fall at the bottom of the screen and the light from the bottom of the object falls at the top of the screen. This indicates that the light travels in a straight line.
