Construction of an electric bell:
An electric bell is made of an electromagnet, bell (metallic cup), soft iron strip (which works as a hammer), and contact screw. The bell is a cup-shaped device made of metal. A soft iron strip works as a small hammer.

Working of Electric Bell:
The terminals $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$ of the bell are connected to a battery through a push-button switch. When the switch is pressed, electric current flows from the battery to the electromagnet, into the contact screw, and finally, to the terminal $T_{2}$ and again to the dry cell.
Thus, the electric circuit is completed. As the electric current flows through the coil.
The following effects take place simultaneously:
(i) The electromagnet gets activated and pulls the soft iron armature strongly towards itself.
(ii) The spring connecting the armature and the stud S gets under tension.
(iii) The hammer strikes against the gong and produces sound.
(iv) The electric circuit breaks at the contact points, but the armature and the hammer continue to move towards the electromagnet, due to the force picked up by them. As the electric circuit breaks, the electromagnet gets demagnetised. So, it cannot hold the armature. At this moment, the spring which is under tension brings the armature back to its original position. But, as the armature returns to its original position, the electrical contact is re-established. Thus, the armature is again attracted towards the electromagnet. In this way, a rapid make and break of the electric circuit take place, and the hammer hits against the gong producing a familiar sound.
