In flowering plants, the fruit is a sweet, fleshy and seed-bearing structure that is formed from the ovary of the flower. Fruits can be developed in three ways syncarpous, apocarpous and multicarpellary.

Fruits are of three types:

Simple fruit

Aggregate fruit

Multiple fruit

Simple fruits are further divided into two:

Fleshy fruits- it is formed a single carpel where the pericarp is juicy, fleshy and is properly differentiated into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp.

Dry Fruits, here the pericarp is dry and undifferentiated.

Flesh fruits are divided into different kinds:

Berry: it is developed from a syncarpous ovary, where mesocarp and endocarp are undifferentiated. The seeds are found inside the pulp. Example of grapes.

Drupe is developed from a monocarpellary ovary which is superior in position. The pericarp is properly differentiated for example mango.

Pome is developed from an inferior, syncarpous ovary. the other floral part like the thalamus also participates in the fruit formation. Example pear

Pope is developed from tricarpellary ovary with fleshy and soft mesocarp and endocarp respectively. Example muskmelon.

Balastula is developed from multilcarpelly, bilocular ovary. Example pomegranate.
