The introduction of railways and steamer services benefited the flow of goods and services in the $19$ th century. The first railway line was started between Mumbai and Thane in $1853$ , and it also provided ease of transportation of both people and products.

However, the economic policies of the British resulted in the decline of Indian industries. India became merely a producer of raw materials under their rule. The exports of commercial products from Bengal declined, and due to the dual power policy in place, the responsibility of collecting revenue was now in hands of the British.

The Indian weavers were forced to sign contracts to finish production in the given time, otherwise, they were punished. The artisans became unemployed in this period.

The villages of India, which were self-reliant and prosperous, became dependent and poor due to aggressive taxation on agriculture. On the other hand, the ports of Madras, Mumbai and Kolkata were developed to suit the British needs.
