Explain the emergency powers of the President.

In India, the President is the nominal head of the state. However, in times of crisis, the President can declare three types of emergencies- national, state, and financial. These are explained below:

(i) National Emergency: A national emergency is declared to the whole nation or part of it if a President thinks that the security of the country is endangered by war, external aggression, or armed rebellion that threatens the integrity of the country. This needs to be approved by the Parliament within one month. During this time, all fundamental rights, except the right to life and personal liberty are curbed.

(ii) State Emergency: A state emergency is declared when the President receives reports from the Governor about the breakdown of constitutional machinery in a state. This is also termed as "President's rule" and can be imposed from a period of six months to three years, having the need to be approved by the Parliament every six months.

(iii) Financial Emergency: A financial emergency is declared at times of economic crisis in a country if the President feels that the financial stability and credit of India are threatened. During this time, the salaries of all government officials are reduced, and money bills passed by the state legislatures need the approval of the President.
