The factors favourable for the formation of ionic compounds are explained below:

(i) Low Ionisation energy of metal atom: Lower the ionisation energy of metal atom, greater is the case of losing the valence electron and hence greater is the tendency to form ionic bonds.

(ii) High electron gain enthalpy of non-metal atom: Higher the value of negative electron gain enthalpy, greater will be the case of formation of anion and hence greater is the tendency to form ionic compounds.

(iii) Electronegativity difference between the reacting atoms: There should be large difference between the electronegativities of the reacting atoms. Higher is the difference between the electronegativity of atoms, greater is the ease of formation of ionic bond.

(iv) Lattice enthalpy: Lattice enthalpy of an ionic solid may be defined as the amount of energy required to completely separate one mole of a solid ionic compound into gaseous constituent ions. Higher the value of lattice energy, higher is the ease of formation of ionic compound.
