In the above diagram, the presence of chlorophyll is tested. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants. It is contained in microscopic cell organelles called chloroplasts. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis. When the leaf is tested in an iodine solution, only the green part of the leaves shows a blue-black colour which proves that chlorophyll helps in producing starch during photosynthesis. 6CO2 + 12H2O → C6H12O6 + H2O The plant is kept in dark to destarched leaves. This ensures that the leaves are free from starch. The pale yellow region turns golden brown, The green region turns bluish-black as it contains starch.
