The life cycle of an individual involves a series of sequential changes in the fertilised egg during its transformation into an adult. These transformation changes are called metamorphosis. The life cycle of a frog can be explained as follows-

The female releases hundreds of eggs on the water surface that remain bound together in a jelly-like substance. At the same time, male releases sperms in the water.

Sperms are motile sex cells that swim in the water and reach the eggs. Hence, fertilisation occurs outside the body in the aquatic medium.

The fertilised egg repeatedly divides and hatches within 1-2 weeks and gives rise to a small worm-like creature called a tadpole larva.

Tadpole larva consists of a mouth, rudimentary gills, and a tail.

Soon after absorbing nutrition from the algae and aquatic vegetation, it turns into an adult. At this stage, the limbs and other organs are completely developed by the action of the thyroxine hormone. The tail becomes extinct.

The adult is now ready to venture out onto dry land.
