The physical divisions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh include:

a. The Outer Plains: It is located at the Southern side of the Union Territory, and is covered by the alluvial plains of Tawi, Ravi and Chenab rivers and their tributaries. The Great Indian Plain is the outer plain's extension of the Great Indian Plains. These plains stretch from the River Ravi to River Chenab to a distance of about 110km. These plains are locally named as the Anderwah and Bajwat.

b. The Shiwaliks: Shiwalik lies to the North of the Outer Plains and is the youngest mountain of the subcontinent. The Shiwalik range is $20 - 50$ Km wide and $600 - 1220$ meters above the sea-level. Duns which are longitudinal valleys lie to the north of the Shiwaliks.

c. The Middle Himalayas: The Pir Panjal represents the middle Himalayas varies in elevation from 1800-3600 meters. The main characteristic s of this range are the deep-cut valleys and the gorges. Local name of the Middle Himalayas is "Pahar". The Middle HimalayaS have the width of $10 - 60$ kms. The sacred Vaishno Devi Mandir lies in the Middle Himalayas. The most ambitious project of the Jammu Srinagar highway has been built up in the Middle Himalayas.

d. The Valley of Kashmir: The most popular Valley of Kashmir has the north-western folds of the Himalayas located in it. It is located in between the Greater Himalayas in the north and Middle Himalayas in the south. The width of the valley ranges between $40 - 60$ km and its length runs approximately to about 130-140kms.

e. The Ladakh Region: The Ladakh Region is also known as the Valley of Ladakh. It consists of the Northern most region of India. This plateau is located at a height of about 5000 m. It has a cold desert which is mostly covered with rocks and granites. It hardly has any kind of vegetation due to the harsh weather. The mighty river of Indus flows through Ladakh. The plateau of Ladakh is made up of the following ranges:

i. Zanskar Range

ii. The Ladakh Range

iii. The Karakoram Range

iv. The Aksai Chin Region

v. Gilgit and Baltistan.
