India is a land with a rich natural heritage. The people of India had worshipped and preserved nature since time immemorial. Forests, trees, mountains, seas, lakes, rivers, wildlife, streams, etc. are part of our natural heritage. The 'Panch Tantra' and the 'Jataka Tales' reveal our close association with nature. Ayurveda, Unani, etc. are also entirely based on nature. Our natural heritage comprises the following elements:

Landscapes - The varying terrains contribute to the diverse landscapes in India. They are rich in minerals, flora and fauna. The Himalayas is an important landscape. Pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath, etc. are located on the Himalayas.

Rivers - The rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Indus, etc. are worshipped in India since ancient times. They are important as they provide fresh drinking water to the people. They also help in irrigation, transportation, generation of hydroelectricity, etc.

Vegetation - Trees and vegetation have enormous influence over the socio-cultural and religious lives of the Indians. They worshipped trees like basil, banyan and pipal. Trees like neem, aloe vera, Ardusi, Ambala, etc. are used for medicinal purposes. Jasmine, rose, sunflower and lotus are known for their beauty and fragrance.

Wildlife - The Indians have shown compassion towards animals since ancient times. In our religion, they were given the status of vehicles of Gods and Goddesses. Our currency notes also have images of animals like lions, a horse, an elephant, a bull, etc.
