Sexual reproduction in plants:

Sexual reproduction in plants involves pollination and fertilisation. Pollination requires abiotic agents (wind, water) and biotic agents (insects and other animals).

The anther contains pollen grains. The pollen grains undergo mitosis and produce a vegetative cell and a generative cell. At this stage, the dehiscence of anther takes place and the pollen grains landed on the stigma of the female part.

The generative cell further divides to form two male gametes. The intine of pollen grains now germinates through the germ pore and form the pollen tube. The pollen tube carrying the two male gametes reaches the ovule through an opening called the micropyle.

One of the male gametes reaches the egg in the ovule and form a zygote after fusion. This process is called fertilisation.

The second male gamete unites with two polar nuclei and endosperm is formed. As two nuclei participate in this process, it is called double fertilisation.
