Identical genetic material (DNA).

The genetic code is identical or somewhat close.

The primary mechanism of gene expression is the same (transcription and translation).

These similarities mean that all living beings have a common ancestor. This ancestor's genetic material was DNA, that it used the genetic code, and that it expressed its genes through transcription and translation. These characteristics are shared by all living species because they were "inherited" from the ancestor.

Although they're helpful for determining the common origins of life, features like possessing DNA or being able to do transcription and translation aren't as helpful in determining how closely different species are related. Different types of molecular features, such as gene nucleotide sequences, may determine which species in a population are most closely related.
