Nitrogen is the main component of proteins that make up plant and animals bodies. The nitrogen cycle is the series of processes by which nitrogen compound is converted into many forms, passing from the atmosphere to the soil to the organism and back into the atmosphere. This process includes nitrogen fixation, nitrification, assimilation, ammonification and denitrification.

Nitrogen fixation: It is a very important step of the nitrogen cycle. The atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) which is present in an inert form, is converted into the usable form ammonia (NH₃).

Nitrogen assimilation: The atmospheric nitrogen is absorbed by Rhizobium bacteria which converts it into proteins. These bacteria are present at the roots of the plants.

Ammonification: When plants and animals die, the organic nitrogen gets convert it into ammonia.

Nitrification: Ammonia is converted into nitrates in the soil with the help of nitrifying bacteria.

Denitrification: It is the process in which the nitrogen compounds converts into nitrate into gaseous nitrogen (N). This process is the final stage of this cycle and occurs in the absence of oxygen.
