The movement of water or solvent molecules from a region of their higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane is called osmosis. The movement of water molecules continues to occur across the membrane until equilibrium is reached. At equilibrium, the water potential on both sides of the membrane becomes equal. Water potential is the potential energy of water per unit volume relative to pure water. The water potential of pure water is more than the water mixed with solutes. The direction of movement of solvent can occur on both sides of the membrane.
