This uptake of K⁺results in an increase in solute concentration within the guard cells, leading to an increase in water uptake through osmosis.

Turgor Pressure:
As the guard cells take up K⁺and water, they become turgid. This increased turgor pressure causes the guard cells to change shape, ultimately causing the stomatal pore to open.

Stomatal Closure:
Conversely, during conditions that require stomatal closure, such as water stress (drought), K⁺exits guard cells, lowering solute concentration, and water moves out, making guard cells flaccid and causing stomata to close.
