Explain the process of blood clotting in detail.

Clotting of blood is a complex process that involves various enzymatically controlled steps for its completion. An injury or trauma causes stimulation of blood platelets to release certain platelets factors. This, in turn, activates the mechanism of blood clotting at the site of injury.

It occurs in the following three steps:

Thromboplastin helps in the formation of enzyme thrombokinase that converts inactive plasma protein prothrombin into thrombin and it also inactivates heparin.

Thrombin acts as proteolytic enzymes that convert fibrinogen molecule which is produced from liver in the presence of vitamin– K to form fibrin.

These fibrin molecules are polymerized to form sticky fibres. This fine structure of thread called fibrin in which dead and damaged formed elements of blood are trapped.

This finally leads to the formation of a clot which is dark reddish-brown scum formed over the surface of injury.
