Inhalation is the mechanical process of taking in atmospheric air rich in oxygen, through the nostrils. During inhalation, the dome-shaped diaphragm contracts and flattens. Simultaneously the contraction of muscles between the ribs pulls the ribs upwards and outwards. These together increase the volume of the chest cavity. As a result, the lungs expand and the air pressure within reduces. This causes atmospheric air to rush in through the nostrils and fill the lungs.

Exhalation is a process of breathing out the air rich in carbon dioxide out of the body. The diaphragm relaxes and regains its normal shape. Simultaneously the ribs are pulled downward and inward by the contraction of another set of muscles in between them. These together cause a reduction in the volume of the chest cavity. As a result, the lungs are compressed and the air is forced out through the nostrils.
