Photosynthesis process in plants:

Photosynthesis is the process through which plants convert light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis, light energy is captured by chlorophyll and used to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbohydrates.

Four factors influence this process:
1. The amount of carbon dioxide present.
2. Temperature.
3. The amount of water.
4. The chlorophyll concentration.

1. The amount of carbon dioxide present: The atmosphere contains about 0.03% of carbon dioxide. The plant takes carbon dioxide from the air through stomata present on undersurface of the leaves. Due to its less amount, it acts as a limiting factor for photosynthesis.
The rate of photosynthesis increases on increasing the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels but only up to certain levels. After the carbon dioxide concentration reaches a threshold level, it starts accumulating in the leaves which leads to slowing down of photosynthesis process. So, excessive CO₂ inhibits photosynthesis, especially when it starts to accumulate.

2. Temperature: The rate of photosynthesis increases with increase in temperatures till it reaches an optimum level for that plant. Beyond the optimum levels on both sides of the normal range, the enzymes are deactivated or destroyed and photosynthesis stops.

3. The amount of Water: Stomata are closed when the water intake is less to stop the loss due to transpiration. With the stomata closing down the CO₂ intake also stops, which affects photosynthesis. Therefore, the effect of water on photosynthesis is more indirect than direct.

4. The chlorophyll concentration: Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis. It helps plants to absorb energy from light. Chlorophyll molecules surround the photosystems. The deteriorating quality of chlorophyll affects the rate of photosynthesis. The lack of chlorophyll affects photosynthesis in a negative way.
