In the early days, natural fibres like cotton, linen, flax, silk and wool were used for making clothes but with the advancement of chemistry today, many varieties of man-made fibres are available in the market. Man-made fibres are made of chemical substances and are called synthetic fibres. Nylon, terylene, rayon, etc. are examples of synthetic fibres. Nylon is manufactured from adipic acid and ethylene diamine. Terylene is manufactured from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Nylon is used to manufacture parachutes, swim wears, etc. Terylene is used in making bottles and clothing.

There are some fibres which are made using both natural and synthetic fibres. They are called semi-synthetic fibres. Terrycot is a semi-synthetic fibre. It is made from terylene which is a synthetic fibre and cotton which is a natural fibre. It is often used in the manufacture of clothes as it can be drawn into fine fabrics. Thus, chemistry plays a role in the clothing industry.
