Sexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction in which two parents are involved. The flower is the main reproductive part of the plant. It consists of four whorls: Petals, sepals, androecium [stamen], and gynoecium [pistil]. Stamen and pistil are the male and female reproductive parts of the flower, respectively. The former consists of filament and anther. The anther produces pollen grains that contain the male gametes. The filament is the stalk that supports the anther.

The latter consists of the stigma, style, and ovary. Stigma is the topmost sticky part of the pistil. Style is the stalk-like structure that connects the ovary and the stigma. The ovary is the swollen basal portion of the pistil. It consists of many oval structures called ovules, which contain female gametes.

The pollen grains are transferred from the anther to the stigma of the flower. This process is called pollination. When the pollen grains are deposited on the stigma of a flower, the pollen grains germinate on the stigma forming pollen tubes through which the two male gametes travel down to reach the ovule.

One male gamete fuses with the female gamete to form a diploid cell called a zygote. The other male gamete fuses with the polar nuclei to form the primary endosperm nucleus. As the fusion of gametes takes place twice, it is called double fertilization. Post fertilization, the zygote divides continuously to form an embryo, the ovary turns into a fruit, and the ovules turn into seeds. The petals and sepal wither and fall off.
