Colloid refers to the colloidal system of a solution. Colloidal particles are the immiscible molecules present in the colloidal solutions. The component present in a small quantity which behaves as a solute is called dispersed phase and the component which is present in the excess and behaves like a solvent is called dispersion medium. On the basis of affinity towards the dispersion medium, colloids can be classified into two-phase. i.e. the lyophilic colloids which are liquid-loving and lyophobic colloids that are liquid-hating.

Peptization is the process that involves the conversion of freshly prepared precipitate into a colloidal solution by adding any suitable electrolyte. The electrolyte added into the precipitate is called peptizing agent or the dispersion agent. For example, if freshly prepared ferric hydroxide is treated with a small quantity of ${FeCl}_{3}$ (electrolyte) solution, a dark reddish-brown colloidal solution $Fe {(OH)}^{3}$ is obtained. Here, ${FeCl}_{3}$ is a peptizing agent.
