Charles Darwin proposed the concept of natural selection as the mechanism of evolution. He explained that due to geometric increase in population but limited food and space available, variations appeared in the individuals of the population which became heterogeneous. Nature acts upon this and selects those organisms which are better adapted to the environment while rejects the unfit. According to Darwin, variations are of two types: continuous variation and discontinuous variation. The continuous variations are inheritable and accumulate over generations to form a new species.

To provide evidence for natural selection, Charles Darwin used the finches of Galapagos Island. He realized that the finches have different beaks because they are adapted to eat different kinds of food. During drought, the finches with the larger beaks survived better than those with the smaller beaks. During rainy season, more small seeds were produced and the finches with smaller beaks fared better.
