The three modes of heat transfer are conduction, convection and radiation.

The process of transmission of heat energy without the actual movement of particles from their positions is called conduction. Conduction can take place when two objects are in contact and temperatures of two objects are not the same.

The process of heat transfer in a fluid, in which the particles of the fluid themselves move from one region of the fluid to another is known as convection. Convection can take place in liquids and gases only, where the particles are free to move about. Mercury is an exception because it gets heated by conduction as it is a very good conductor of heat.

Radiation is the process of heat transfer through the vacuum. It is the transference of heat energy directly from a hot body to a cold body, without heating the space in between the two bodies. Radiation is the fastest mode of heat transfer.
