The feudatories chiefs wanted to form new kingdoms under their control during the early medieval period. This gave rise to some powerful kingdoms, which includes,

The Palas, who were dominant in eastern India.

The Gurjara-Pratiharas who were dominant in western Indian and in the Upper Gangetic valley.

The Rashtrakutas, who controlled the Deccan and the territories in northern and southern India at different times.

Reasons for Tripartite struggle:

To hold control over the city of Kanauj situated in the Ganges valley. This city was seen as a symbol of sovereignty.

Kanauj’s location in the Gangetic plains made it easier to conduct commercial activities and became a valuable possession.

To control over the other fertile regions of Gangetic valley.

The rulers desired over the riches beyond their territories in order to expand their dynasties to acquire more wealth and enhance their military power.

To demonstrate their powers and resources by building large temples.
