When two compounds react, if their ions are interchanged, then the reaction is called double displacement reaction. This is also known as metathesis reaction. There are two types of double displacement reaction. They are,

Precipitation reaction: When aqueous solutions of two compounds are mixed, if they react to form an insoluble compound and a soluble compound, then it is called precipitation reaction. This insoluble substance is known as precipitate. For example, when clear solutions of lead nitrate and potassium iodide react, a yellow precipitate of lead iodide is formed in potassium nitrate.

Neutralisation reaction: The reaction between an acid and a base in known as neutralisation reaction. A soluble salt in water, with the evolution of heat is formed in the reaction. For example, when a base sodium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and water are formed.
