Proteins depending on the ease of extraction are classified as integral and peripheral proteins. The integral proteins (70%) are partially or totally buried in membrane while the peripheral proteins (30%) lie on membrane surface. Integral proteins functions as channelling or transporting across the cell membrane while the peripheral proteins functions to form temporary bond within the cell membrane, allowing them to attach or reattach at specific time with specific signals.

Fluid Mosaic Model- An improved model of the structure of cell membrane was proposed by Singer and Nicholson (1972) which states that quasi-fluid nature of lipid allows the lateral movement of protein within the overall bilayer and this movement of protein within the membrane is said as its fluidity which is due to lipid.

Fluid nature of membrane helps in- cell growth, secretions, endocytosis, cell division, formation of intercellular junction.
