Explain the water treatment plant with the help of a diagram.

The water is purified in the water treatment plant in the following steps-

The water undergoes sedimentation and decantation to remove the large solid particles.

Coagulation- Under this process, the water is first treated with chemicals like alum. Due to this, the suspended particles come together and form lumps which gets settle at the bottom of the container. This process is known as loading.

Sedimentation- It is the second stage in which the water is collected in large tanks and left undisturbed for hours. Due to this the large insoluble particles suspended in the water get settled down at the bottom of the tank and are finally removed.

Filtration- It is the third stage in which, the clear water obtained from the second stage, is passed through the filters made of sand, clay and charcoal. This removes the small floating particles.

Chlorination- It is the final step in which, chlorine gas is passed through the water to kill the germs. It is then distributed to the localities.
