Explain the working of a fire extinguisher.

A fire extinguisher is developed using the reaction between sulfuric acid and sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate. A sealed glass bottle of sulphuric acid is placed inside a container filled with an aqueous sodium carbonate solution. When the knob of the fire extinguisher is pressed, then sulphuric acid mixes with sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and produce lots of carbon dioxide gas. The pressure of the gas forces stream of the liquid fall on the burning substance. Carbon dioxide gas forms a blanket over the burning substance and cuts off the supply of air to the burning substance. As a result, burning stops and fire gets extinguished.
