Alveoli are the respiratory exchange surfaces of the lungs are the actual site so for the gaseous exchange. Air moves in and out of the alveoli during breathing. Inspiration brings in the air with high partial pressure of oxygen while expiration removes out the foul air containing carbon dioxide. The process of inspiration and expiration are simultaneous with the exchange of gases across the lungs and tissues and also with the transport of these gases to and from the tissues. Thus, the composition of alveolar air remains fairly constant even though gases are exchanged with the blood in the capillaries that surround the alveoli.
